Writing:

1. https://killzoneblog.com/2019/03/you-cant-please-everyone.html “Back in California, Nelson holed up in his music room, and three weeks later came up with a song about his experience. “Garden Party” appeared in 1972 and reached number six on Billboard’s list. It was Nelson’s last hit song. He died in a plane crash in 1985 at the age of 45.” “The point is that every artist has to realize you can’t please everyone. Indeed, as the noted journalist Herbert Bayard Swope once said, “I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: Try to please everybody.” I’ve done too much of this in the past. It was hard for me to learn to write the story for me and not with thinking what others would think of me. You have to turn off that inner critic, that’s when the good stuff comes out.

2. http://booksbywomen.org/are-free-books-a-good-thing-by-jill-orr/ “Like the random dude at every book signing you’ve ever been to, I’m about to bring up a topic that may make you uncomfortable: money. I know, I know… it’s awkward. It feels like the conversation around the written word should float above those sorts of philistine concerns. We write because we’re compelled to; we read because it enriches our hearts and minds.”

3. https://megdowell.com/2019/03/23/12-fears-all-writers-face-to-remind-you-youre-definitely-not-alone/ “1. Spelling something wrong in a Very Important Email. (You checked it 20 times already, but STILL.)

2. Not being “good enough.”

4. http://thelotusandpen.com/2019/03/23/3-things-first-lines/ “Time for another installment of “3 Things with Heather Demetrios”…This one is all about writing a kickass first line.”

5. https://kobowritinglife.com/2019/03/26/dont-let-comparison-steal-your-joy%EF%BB%BF/ “If you’re like me, you wake up in the morning, brush your teeth, grab some coffee, head to your writer space, turn on your computer, and open your favorite social media account. What might’ve started as a great day quickly turns depressing when you see all the posts by other authors celebrating their accomplishments.”

Research & Fun Bits:

1. https://gibsonauthor.wordpress.com/2019/03/23/merlin-tamer-of-dragons/ “Everyone knows the story of Merlin, the wizard genius behind Arthur’s reign. As the Vintage News reports, a chance discovery by historians at the University of Bristol added a new angle to the old tale: dragons.

The historians found a set of important 13th-century manuscripts hidden inside a younger book. The manuscript fragments contain extracts from a previously unknown version of the Vulgate Cycle, a set of Old French texts that tell the story of King Arthur.” I’ve long been a fan of Arthur tales.

2. https://legendsofwindemere.com/2019/03/23/just-one-really-busy-week-to-go/ “I don’t know why I think I can get writing done during the week.  Most days, I have work then I come home with just enough time to do my biking then either pick my son up or meet him at the bus.  Then, it’s off to a nightly appointment or activity, so I’m tired by the time I get back.  Usually scrambling to eat dinner or, if missed earlier, do my biking.  I can’t just start writing at 9 PM and stop mid-section at 11 PM.  So, I didn’t really try and settled in more for blogging at night.  April has been set up and I’m moving into May, which is good.  Wow.  I’m just cramming things in here.”

3. https://juantetcts.wordpress.com/2019/03/23/the-new-face-of-mental-illness/ “More than once, I was asked about the word homelessness in the name of my Nonprofit. Although my target client is mentally ill, I intentionally disregarded that label in the name because of the associated stigma. The face of mental illness has changed, and expectations of what it LOOKS LIKE needs a major upgrade.”

It can happen at any age and because it is a certainty, it does pay to prepare for it, or if unexpected have some strategies to cope with it.”

When Pris turned 15 – assuming he lived to age 15 – and was able to prove himself to the Heads, Pris’ role would change and with luck he’d become a Hunter.”

It’s probably the one that makes me feel most uncomfortable, but that might just be because the protagonist is a child of a similar age to my son.”

Why not? He needs the diversion. Time on his hands and money to burn. His life is affluent and empty. Little on the horizon and memories tinged bittersweet.
That’s all about to change. He’s about to find something that is perhaps better left unfound.
