Who is this ‘they’? What can’t you win? To me, what they’re talking about is the new style of slush pile.

The world of writing and publishing has changed – not a matter of changing, anymore, it has changed, it will go on changing, and the ones who give up easily will be the ones who say things like the words above. Most of the time, when I ask them why they give up, it’s because of that excuse, ‘You can’t win against that,’ they say. ‘That’ is the number of other writers, publications, stories in all forms and shapes and on dozens of platforms, weighing down their own efforts.

But it has always been like that, hasn’t it? In the days when big publishing houses ran the world, the little writer submitted, submitted again and again, begged, paid, bribed, used different names to do it all again and again…
